In addition, the torque specifications of a 4.8L Chevy engine are useful when performing do-it-yourself maintenance. For instance, torque specifications are necessary when performing cylinder head installations.
Chevy 4.8-Liter Engine Specifications
As an example, the 2000 Chevrolet Tahoe came equipped with a 4.8L engine, boasting a horsepower of 275 at 5,200 rpm. Along with a four-speed automatic overdrive transmission, this engine had a torque of 290 at 4,000 rpm. The bore X stroke was 3.78 X 2.37 with a displacement of 4,807cc.
Towing Capabilities
With four-wheel drive, the 2000 Chevrolet Tahoe had a cargo volume of 63.60 cubic feet, with a standard towing capacity of 6,800 pounds. Maximum towing for this vehicle was 8,800 pounds. In addition, the standard payload was 1,751 pounds.
Torque Specifications
When working with the cylinder heads of your 4.8L Chevy engine, the cylinder head bolts and gaskets are at the forefront. The bolts range in size from 3.94 inches to 6.1 inches. If replacing the cylinder head bolts, tighten the new bolts with 30 N-m, or 22 lb-ft of torque. Begin with the center bolt, then continue on from the outside inwards.

In an engine, the cylinder head, also referred to as the head, sits over the engine's cylinders on the engine block. The entire component consists of a platform that includes valves and spark plugs. Torque refers to the amount of force required to rotate an object, in this case a nut or a bolt, around an axis point or pivot.

In engines manufactured before 1996, the cylinder head bolts requires 65 foot-pounds of torque. In engines made during or after 1996, the cylinder head bolts 22 foot-pounds of torque. In either case, the bolts must be torqued twice.

The four inner bolts of the exhaust manifold in all 4.3L V6 engines attach to the cylinder head with 30 foot-pounds of torque, and all other bolts join with 20 foot-pounds. The intake manifold bolts require 33 foot-pounds of torque to join properly with the cylinder head. The spark plugs require 11 foot-pounds of torque to attach to the cylinder head. The valve covers in pre-1996 engines need 7.5 foot-pounds of torque, and in 1996 and later engines, 8.83 foot-pounds.
